Family Get-together
Gary, Aimee (not in shot) & Oliver (also not in shot) joined us for the first night in Chapel Stile and Andy stayed for four nights thereafter. For a few hours on Sunday, we were all together and we had lunch at Wainwright's Inn. We had a walk around the pushchair-friendly tracks of Chapel Stile and Elterwater before they had to go home.
Thrang Quarry
Immediately behind the cottage is Thrang Quarry. On the morning of Monday 16th May, Andy and I decided to climb Silver How. There is no public right of way into the quarry from Fir Garth, so we walked down to the road and up a public footpath into the quarry area. We ascended the fell close to Megs Gill.

We had to get a move on due to a weather forecast of steady rain. I left my camera at the cottage and we took a few photos with 'phones.

By the time, we got back to the cottage it was raining. We came back much the same way. 1.5hrs.
In the evening of Thursday, May 19th Molly and I set off from the cottage and take the easy path down to the road, behind the lower row of Fir Garth cottages. Soon, we pick up the public footpath rising from the B5343.
Baysbrown Farm Campsite
I decided to try a new and unheralded route up Silver How. We followed the gill which appears to supply water to (maybe) the cottages; there are two manholes down there along with an unidentified pair of small buildings. The gill is easy to follow with the main challenges being overgrowing juniper and occasional small cascades.

Lang How
We are on our own up here on this pleasant evening. A couple of deer scuttle off upon seeing us and a few sheep are pottering about. Lang How summit is higher than Silver How and well worth a small detour.
Eastern Fells
Seat Sandal has created a deep shadow on her eastern flank; Fairfield is the high point near the centre of this view and Helvellyn is far to the left and less prominent from here.

Silver How summit is not far away and Windermere can be seen in the centre, a few miles away.
Lang How Tarn

It must be about 1,000ft of ascent from the cottage to the top of Silver How and it doesn't matter which route we take, it's a great climb with fine views and plenty of interest.
Burlington Slate Quarry
There is a viewing platform in the trees to the left of the warehouses.

Wainwright's Inn |
The descent route was down Megs Gill and then across into Thrang Quarry.
Thrang Quarry
Plenty of scope for safe exploration around the disused quarry. Care must always be taken in these areas, especially if the stone is wet.

Soon we are heading back down the old miners's track to Fir Garth.
Parking at Fir Garth
If you rent No.16, as we did, you can park two cars undercover at the far end of the parking area. Plenty of parking for other residents and the area is private, not for you or I on daytrips.
Walkers: Molly and Me.
Time taken: 2hrs over a distance of about 3.5 miles.
Route: Un-named gill up past Sheep Crag and on to Lang How; Silver How. Megs Gill, Thrang Quarry.
Weather and conditions: A pleasant evening with little wind.
