Parking at Hardraw
Well, what should you do on a bright and sunny August Bank Holiday? Everyone and his dog will be out and about. The coast - No! The Lakes - No!! Hawes - no.... but Hardraw .....
Cart House Cafe
Relatively good drive to Hardraw, just one or two slow-coaches who thought it was Sunday. This tidy little cafe is always a good bet. The menu is not over elaborate and there should be something for everyone.
Outward Bound |
To Simonstone Hall |
Just to the right of the Green Dragon Pub, we head into the fields and up to West House. A well worn pathway heads towards Simonstone Hall. Then a short road stretch and up to Low Shaw.
Low Shaw
Low Clint
The hillside ahead is the most southerly part of "Lovely Seat", that curiously-named Dales fell twixt Wensleydale and Swaledale.
The walk heads up the field to the large tree in the centre of the photo on the right.
Upper Wensleydale
I reckon the high point in the distance will be East Baugh Fell, beyond Garsdale Head.
The Mining Area
Old Mine
Mining into this fragile rock must have been very dangerous!
Stonework
Looking Out
The second old mine which was "open" seemed a little safer to enter....

Soon enough we were heading back to Hardraw.
